Reboot: Puma and Yves Béhar Spend Three Years Designing Super-Green Shoebox

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

It’s hard to imagine something as simple as the shoebox being completely overhauled and rethought. But Puma and Fuseproject, the design firm led by Yves Béhar, have done just that, in a design that was almost three years in the making. (The project is actually just the beginning of a brand overhaul, to be revealed soon.)

“Rethinking the shoebox is an incredibly complex problem, and the cost of cardboard and the printing waste are huge, given that 80M are shipped from China each year,” Béhar tells FastCompany.com. “Cargo holds in the ships can reach temperatures of 110 degrees for weeks on end, so packaging becomes an enormous problem. This solution protects the shoes, and helps stores to stock them, while saving huge costs in materials.”

Celebrity mugshots on mugs! An obvious idea, but we didn’t think of it. Maybe starting the day with a reminder of how even celebrities stumble occasionally is just the extra lift you need to start the day.

Light and sweet?

From Design Milk:

“Mystique hotel sits on the cliffs of Oia in Santorini Island, providing guests spectacular views of beautiful scenery complete with the token clear blue waters. The resort includes suites and villas decked out by local stone, wood, and glass. The architecture and design fuses contemporary flair along with traditional style, allowing the resort to seamlessly blend in with its “I-need-really-need-to-go-there” surroundings.”

Made & Sold Book

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

I saw a blurb on this new book on Cool Hunting.

“Artists, designers and illustrators are doing it for themselves! Tough times often lead to greater creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. Where once designers might have produced a set of postcards to promote themselves or simply for fun, demand for individual design has led to an explosion of quirky, covetable products for sale via the Internet. Self-initiated projects, such as T-shirts or button designs, are fast becoming businesses in themselves. This book showcases more than 500 of the coolest and most exciting graphic products by over 90 practitioners from around the world, including: books, magazines and zines; toys, posters, prints and canvases; fonts and typographic 3D products; clothing and accessories.”

Honda’s Segway Killer

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Autoblog calls it “far more intriguing than a Segway” due largely to the Honda Omni Traction (HOT) drive system that allows the personal transporter to move forward, back, and left and right on a series of small wheels. Unfortunately, Honda wouldn’t let anyone peek underneath to see the magic. When turned on the U3-X stands upright making small motions to maintain balance. And as awkward as it looks, riding the U3-X “couldn’t be easier” — like a Segway you just lean ever so subtly in the direction you want to go. It will tip over if the rider leans too far or too fast but it’s apparently very simple and intuitive to keep upright. The 20-pound model tested was designed for indoor use only and booked along at an overdue-toilet-break pace of 4MPH.honda_unicycle

palindrome2

The Palindrome series was created in response to the brief set by the recent Designers of the Future award exhibited at Design Miami / Art Basel 2009. The brief specified the use of plaster and mirror as the primary materials with which to build an installation.

The series focuses on the experience of symmetry with each piece comprising of half mould and half cast. The result is that the forms, textures and details on one side is mirrored on the other. The wood is first assembled as a mould and then the composite casting material is layered inside. Once this is set, the wooden mould is opened up, turned inside out and used to create the opposing side to the cast. The two sides are then bolted together using mould making fasteners.

Each imperfection is complimented on the opposite side of the unit: circular saw marks become symmetrical decorative swirls, knots in the wood become motifs and holes become handles. The wooden halves of the furniture have been engraved with a Palindrome word or name, which results in the word being repeated on the cast side in raised writing.

The invitation in the brief to use plaster is interesting as it is primarily an architectural / interior material rather than a common industrial design material. Keeping this in mind, the pieces reference an architectural language in both the material textures and also the simplistic proportions and forms which were derived directly from the sizes of the timber received from the saw mill. The technique of creating simple timber moulds is common in Modernist architecture, where ‘fair facing’ is used to create concrete structures often with a brutalist heavy wood grain.

Punk Rock Jackets

I stumbled across this site with shot of hand painted punk motor cycle jackets. I had a lot of friends with these back in the day so I thought it was funny to see them elevated to high fashion now.
