Parking Meters Upcycled into Bike Racks

Friday, February 19th, 2010

nyc-rack

Via Cool Hunting:

“In a move that tackles both the lack of bike racks in NYC and the problem of what to do with obsolete parking meters, the city recently started a campaign transforming 225 of the old metal poles into circular stations for locking up bikes.”

As a cyclist I’m happy to have more spots to lock up, and regular parking meters are so safe when using chains because the bike can be lifted off and carried away to be unlocked else where.

Bureaucrats Offices

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

From Juxtapoz’s site.

Jan Banning’s portraits of bureaucrats in their work environments.

“Bureaucracy oh bureaucracy,” writes Heather Murphy for NPR. “How easy is to curse that amorphous force that sucks up time, binding productivity and creativity in red tape. But how do you show what it looks like?

Six years ago, photographer Jan Banning sat, stumped by this question. The self-declared anarchist was given what seemed ‘the most horrible assignment of my entire life.’ A magazine had asked him to illustrate decentralization of administration in Mozambique.”

“Cardon Copy is an awesome project where lame posters and flyers from around the city are pulled down from bulletin boards and telephones poles to only be redesigned and placed back to there original locations. These wild and fun designs are meant to “overpower their message with a new visual language.” Make sure to check them out!”

Standing in Someone Else’s Shoes, Almost for Real

Monday, May 4th, 2009

New York Times Health section article. A new technique creates a “body swapping” illusion.

someoneelseshoes

“The technique is simple. A subject stands or sits opposite the scientist, as if engaged in an interview. Both are wearing headsets, with special goggles, the scientist’s containing small film cameras. The goggles are rigged so the subject sees what the scientist sees: to the right and left are the scientist’s arms, and below is the scientist’s body.”
